Ethiopia has seen a significant rise in coffee exports, exceeding expectations by more than 128,000 tonnes during the first 11 months of the current country’s fiscal year, the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA) reports. This growth has also opened access to 20 new international markets.
Shafi Umer, Deputy Director General of ECTA, credited recent reforms and the opening of East Africa’s first coffee tasting centre for helping Ethiopia export a total of 409,605 tonnes of coffee – well above the planned 280,887 tonnes.
He highlighted that allowing licensed farmers to export directly has empowered over 100 coffee growers to manage their own exports, helping triple the country’s product export revenues in recent years.
The new coffee tasting centre and the planting of more than eight billion coffee seedlings under the Green Legacy Initiative have improved quality and attracted more international buyers.
These combined efforts are helping Ethiopia strengthen its position as a leading global coffee producer while ensuring benefits reach the farmers at the heart of the industry.
