Antalya’s summer tradition under Mediterranean sun

Each summer, the rural landscapes of Dosemealti, a district in Antalya, Türkiye, transform into a vast outdoor gallery of handwoven carpets laid across harvested fields.

On June 18, 2025, aerial views once again revealed this seasonal tradition in full swing as thousands of rugs were set out to naturally soften their vibrant colors under the Mediterranean sun.

These carpets, known for their use of plant-based root dyes and original loom weaving techniques, are collected from various parts of Türkiye.

They represent a rich cultural heritage, particularly in Dosemealti, a region long associated with traditional rug-making.

Before being laid in the fields, the carpets undergo a careful process. After being gathered from Anatolian towns and villages, they are washed, dried, and then mended to repair any damage.

Only then are they spread out across the empty farmland, where the strong summer sun gradually transforms their bold colors into a softer, pastel palette, a change that is both aesthetic and market-driven.

Workers turn the carpets regularly to ensure an even exposure. This process typically lasts through the hottest months, and by September, the carpets are dusted off and packed for shipment.

While they hold great cultural value in Türkiye, their primary destinations are international markets, with the United States among the top buyers.

According to local workers, the sun-faded look is highly sought after by foreign customers, adding a visual softness that enhances the rugs’ antique appeal.

The striking sight of thousands of multicolored carpets covering the fields has become a visual symbol of Dosemealti.

Tourists traveling through the region often stop to photograph what has become known as the “carpet fields,” and even musicians and filmmakers have begun using the area as a backdrop for video clips and scenes.

“They take lots of photos. We’re happy because we get to promote our local rugs. It’s hard work in the heat, but when we see the attention these carpets get at the end of the season, it’s all worth it.”

Many of the rugs feature motifs associated with the Yoruk, a nomadic Turkic group historically known for their weaving traditions.

These designs, along with the natural dyes and handmade quality, contribute to their value and recognition both domestically and abroad.

Another artisan working in the fields said the interest shown by visitors, particularly in traditionally dyed pieces, is a source of pride.
