Cairo: PonteSud – News Desk

Egypt welcomed the announcement by US President Donald Trump on Tuesday of a ceasefire agreement between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Israel.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt described the development as a significant step toward containing the recent dangerous escalation in the region and a potential turning point in ending the military confrontation between the two countries and restoring calm.

Egypt affirmed that this development presents a genuine opportunity to break the cycle of escalation and retaliation, and foster an environment conducive to the resumption of political and diplomatic efforts.

Egypt called on both the Israeli and Iranian parties to fully uphold the ceasefire, exercise the utmost restraint during this critical juncture, and undertake all necessary measures to advance de-escalation and preserve regional security, stability, and the well-being of their peoples.

In the statement, Egypt underlined that it has consistently advocated for a ceasefire and de-escalation throughout its intensive direct engagements with all relevant regional and international stakeholders, including the parties to the conflict, over the past weeks.

It also reaffirmed its continued diplomatic efforts, in coordination with regional and international partners, to consolidate the ceasefire and advance the trajectory toward de-escalation, with the ultimate objective of achieving a comprehensive and sustainable resolution to the crises undermining regional stability.

Egypt reiterated that the Palestinian cause remains at the core of the regional conflict, stressing that a just and comprehensive resolution that fulfills the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people constitutes the sole pathway to achieving lasting peace and stability in the region and beyond.

This can only be achieved through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with Al-Quds (occupied East Jerusalem) as its capital, according to the statement.
