Indonesia is looking into the possibility of importing oil and natural gas from Russia, following a recent meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and Russian Head of state Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg.

Speaking in Jakarta on 24 June, Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia confirmed that discussions with Russian state-owned enterprises are underway.

“This week, I will meet with a delegation from Russian state-owned enterprises visiting Indonesia,” he said.

Lahadalia, who accompanied President Prabowo during his visit to Russia, said the trip had opened new opportunities not only for energy trade but also for technological collaboration.

“We have idle wells, but in terms of technology, we need to learn and collaborate,” he explained.

President Putin has reiterated Russia’s readiness to strengthen energy ties with Indonesia, particularly through expanded crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports.

“Russian companies are already working effectively in Indonesia, and we are ready to increase oil and LNG supplies to the Indonesian market,” he said during a joint press conference on 19 June.
